 In the 1500s there were 30 to 60 million of these majestic creatures. Some estimates put them in the 100 million range. In any event, by the late 1800s they’d been systematically slaughtered almost to extinction. The “because” was inevitable; the “why” and “how” was unconscionable! By 1884 there were only 325 individuals left. By 1910 that number rose to 1,000. Today there are 500,000 in the US with 5,000 in Yellowstone National Park. Recently, th

 If you’ve ever been close to one of these guys, the only word I can think of is “Awesome”. But don’t get to close. Standing nearly 7’tall and weighing close to 2800 lbs., toward the end of summer when the “rut” starts, these big bulls have absolutely no sense f humor. Historians believe that North America had over 100 million of these creatures. Now reduced to a few thousand they’re still Awesome!   -
